Check out these 10 simple and affordable ways to update your deck or pergola! These backyard deck ideas will add loads of style to your outdoor space!
Our home sits on half an acre and backs up to farmland, so we end up spending a lot of our time outside during the warmer months.
When we initially bought the house in April of 2016 we didn’t feel the need to update any of the exterior areas because we were busy updating the interior, but since then we’ve done some serious updating to the exterior!
You can check out our initial deck makeover here and our recent patio makeover here.
For today’s post, I wanted to share with you 10 backyard deck ideas – many of these I incorporated into our original backyard deck makeover and a few others I hope to use as we restore the deck in the next few months.
They can easily be used individually to add just a bit of refreshing to an outdoor area, so if you like just one of these simple deck ideas, give it a try!
Don’t feel like you have to be crazy like me and update it all… 😉

2. Paint the deck floor a fun color or pattern.
You could paint the entire deck, or a popular option is to paint just a specific area to look like it has an area rug!
3. Add trellises to the deck corners.
These simple grid trellises define the deck making it feel like an outdoor room!
4. Build a bench seat along privacy panels.
Don’t forget to add pillows and throws to the bench! 🙂
5. Install a retractable cover.
There are some great DIY versions of these that would be really affordable and fully customizable!
6. Hang curtains.
These can be great for privacy, in addition to adding a soft, cozy feel to the space.
7. Plant flowering vines.
Not only do these provide a beautiful natural element to the space, but they can also provide shade!
8. Hang clear lights.
The warmth of these lights really adds some style to the space, especially at dusk.
9. Add hanging baskets of flowers.
You can’t go wrong with flowers…
10. Hang lanterns.
They don’t have to be anything expensive or fancy – even just round paper lanterns add some fun to the space!
