Barn doors are a staple in the farmhouse style, so I knew at some point we would get one in our home. 😉
Not only are they super stylish, but they’re the prefect option for closing off doorways where a swinging door would be dysfunctional – which was the case for the newly-installed tunnel between our kids’ rooms.
When we started the process of designing our daughter’s room, we talked through all the DIY options for how to build a barn door. We searched for an easy method, but every process we came up with just seemed like a lot of work on top of our current project load.
Which is why I was so excited to discover the Interior Barn Door Stikits from Stikwood! Not only does the Stikit make the building process extremely simple (we honestly built our entire barn door in under an hour!) but you end up with a stunning DIY sliding barn door made out of REAL reclaimed wood.
For today’s post, I’m sharing with you one of my new favorite DIY projects – how to build a barn door in under an hour with a Stikwood Stikit. 🙂
HOW TO BUILD A BARN DOOR
IN UNDER AN HOUR!
Materials & Tools
- Interior Barn Door Stikit (ours is Reclaimed Weathered Wood White)
- Barn Door Hanging Hardware (ours is the add-on from Stikwood)
- Barn Door Handle
- Trim (for behind hanging hardware)
- Level
- Nail Gun & Nails
- Drill
- Wrench
- Pen
Instructions for How to Build a Barn Door
First, open your boxes from Stikwood and lay everything out.
You should have one door core (which folds out to make the full door size), reclaimed wood side-caps, reclaimed wood planks for the front and back, and a roller tool.
STEP 1: INSTALL SIDE PIECES
To start building your DIY sliding barn door, fold out your door core and peel and stick on your side trim pieces.
Be sure to line them up with the lines on the door’s core!
After attaching the side pieces to both sides, the door should feel completely solid.
Before moving on, stand the door up on its side and roll the edges – this helps the adhesive strips grab tight.
STEP 2: INSTALL PLANKS
Next, move on to applying the planks! Simply peel off the adhesive backs and align the pieces of reclaimed wood with their spots on the door core’s grid!
We started at the top and were sure to roll each row of planks as we stuck them to the core.
Continue sticking and rolling the planks all the way down the front.
When the first side is complete, turn it over and do the same on the second side.
STEP 3: INSTALL HARDWARE
Lastly, install the door’s hanging hardware and handle. Be sure to follow the instructions included with your hardware – since every set is different, I’m going to leave that part up to you.
We chose to install our hardware on a piece of trim so that it slides past the trimmed-out tunnel next to it. Consider the depth of what you’re door will close when installing your hardware too.
STEP 4: INSTALL DIY SLIDING BARN DOOR
Once the hardware is installed, hang your DIY sliding barn door on the track and enjoy!
My kids LOVE having this door and we are extremely pleased with the durability of it. It’s not often you can make something out of true reclaimed wood and have it stand up to the hands of children! 😉
Plus, it just looks so beautiful in Chloe’s new “big-girl” room. 🙂
