Take a tour of my modern farmhouse living room decorated with white pumpkins, greenery and a touch of orange and learn how easy it is to decorate for Autumn with neutral fall decor!
Decorating for fall can be hard when you aren’t a huge fan of the traditional fall colors like red, yellow and orange. Am I right?
In our home, I always decorate with neutrals (like black, white and green) with just a hint of pink or blue – so I definitely feel the fall decorating struggle!
But this year, rather than conform to the “traditional” colors of fall, I’ve stuck to what I like and decorated with neutral fall decor instead!
In an effort to help you do the same thing, I’m going to give you a tour of our modern farmhouse fall living room along with 5 easy ways to add some neutral fall decor to YOUR home.
Neutral Fall Decorating Tips
Decorating for the seasons is supposed to be fun, so don’t let the trends or traditional styles scare you away from decorating your home in a way you love and makes you feel cozy.
Prior to this year I always decorated with the basic autumn colored leaves and pumpkins, but each time I set them out I realized it wasn’t a style I loved. It was OK, but not my favorite.
Which is why I’ve decided to use black and white indoor fall decorations this year with a hint of green and pale orange instead!
If you’re feeling a bit stuck when it comes to decorating your home for fall, let me give you a few tips.
When should you put out fall decorations?
I mean, when it comes to decorating, I truly believe you should do things whenever you like. 😉
BUT, if you want a rule of thumb, any time in September (after Labor Day) is great!
How do you decorate for fall on a budget?
There are so many ways to decorate for ANY season on a budget – a few of my recommendations are:
- DIY – There are honestly a million blog tutorials pinned on Pinterest that make fabulous decor from low-cost dollar store items.
- Reuse – Store the decor you buy or make each year in totes to use again the next year. Even if you give them a little change each year, at least you aren’t having to buy everything new!
- Thrift – Check your local thrift stores for decor before you buy retail. I have a simple guide for shopping for decor at thrift stores here.
- Shop the “After Season” Sales – Go to your favorite stores after each season and stock up on decor for the following year at major clearance prices!
How do I make my house cozy for fall?
The easiest way to make a house cozy is to add soft textures and yummy scents.
Try adding a few lush blankets and fall scented candles to your space for an instant increase in the coziness.

My Living Room Decorated with Neutral Fall Decor
Now’s the fun part – my living room tour!
I’ve done my best to link up the sources under each photo, but if I missed something, just let me know!
Welcome to our fall living room…
We actually call this space the “family room” and as you see here, it’s accessed through the kitchen. You can see the butcher block kitchen island and glass pendant lights above the island in this shot.
Our house is only 1400 sq/ft, so every space somewhat flows into the other. 😉
I decorated our mantel with eucalyptus, white pumpkins and my favorite “Give Thanks” sign.
I continued the white pumpkins down to the hearth where I filled our metal wood basket with them.
Can you believe all of these pumpkins came from our garden this year? I’m so glad we planted them!
Over on the piano, I added a simple bouquet of neutral stems and orange roses in one of my favorite ceramic pitchers.
I typically put more decor on top of the piano, but for some reason this fall I was craving simplicity… So, a small floral arrangement and simple frame vignette was all I chose to add. 🙂
I seriously can’t get enough of this bouquet! It was a pre-arranged greenery bouquet from Michael’s and I added just a few orange roses to it.
So pretty, right?
I also added a small bouquet in a mini-pitcher over by the TV along with my “count your blessings” sign.
Over on the couch side of the room, I simply changed out my magnolia wreath for a fall-inspired wreath I made years ago and left neutral pillows.
I had originally added orange throw pillows to the couch but it just felt like too much orange. I’m glad I took them out, because I’m loving just the little pops of orange throughout the space.
So what do you think of our living room decorated with simple, neutral fall decor? I’m loving it and I had so much fun putting it together!
Now let’s look at how you can take some ideas from my indoor fall decorations and apply it to yours!
5 Easy Ways to Decorate for Autumn with Neutral Fall Decor
1. Use white pumpkins
White pumpkins are a great way to add neutral fall decor! They give the feeling of autumn without the bright orange coloring.
I actually grew ours in our garden to save on cost!
2. Add greenery
Greenery can easily give the feeling of fall if used along with stems that highlight the autumn season. Try adding small gold or pale orange stems to your eucalyptus wreath or bouquets of greenery.
3. Try natural elements
Use decor made out of natural textures like burlap, wood or metal!
4. Use neutral pillows and throws
Rather than adding fall-themed pillows to your sofa, try using white, cream or black pillows! Use throws that are neutral in color, like our black and white striped blanket.
5. Don’t be afraid of a bit of color
Try choosing one color that’s a version of the warm fall colors (I chose pale orange) and add it in sparingly. Maybe just a single flower in a bouquet or a small sign.
So, are you ready to decorate for fall? I hope so! As always, let me know if you have any questions.
