Our One Year Home-iversary – A Look Back

I can’t believe it’s been a year since we moved into this house! Time flies! I thought it would be fun to take a look at all we’ve done in the last 12 months and celebrate all of the hard work we’ve put into making this house our home. We’ve definitely spent lots of hours laboring over it, so it’s good to remember and be thankful for how far we’ve come. We will take a brief look at all of the projects we’ve tackled and then look at a list of what we’re still planning to do. So sit back, grab a cup of coffee, and let’s take a tour of our little farmhouse makeover. 🙂

April

In the first two weeks we owned the home, we updated the kid’s bedrooms. We painted all the walls, replaced all the trim, light fixtures, and closet doors and added crown molding.

We’ve since rearranged it and swapped out the changing table for a teepee. 🙂

We let him pick the color of his accent wall and then he got to help us paint it too. It was a really fun project to include him in!

Master Bedroom

Check out this post for a more detailed tour of the master bedroom. We painted, updated trim and lighting, and added a shiplap accent wall and crown molding.

Backyard

We traveled to California for a week in June (for my sister’s wedding 🙂 ) so we didn’t spend a lot of time working on the house that month. We did, however, have time to purchase a riding lawn mower for the 1/2 acre of grass – mowing it with a small push mower takes FOREVER – and purchase/install a play structure for the kids. (BTW, both of these were Craigslist purchases… We rarely buy things new!)

Guest Bathroom

Oh, the guest bathroom… It’s my favorite. I mean, I love the rest of the house, but there’s something about this bathroom that just makes me happy. See this post for details on the makeover and check out its feature on Shutterfly here!

I still can’t believe we did this entire bathroom gut and makeover in just three short weeks.

August

Family Room

This room was being used as a dining room by the previous owners of the house but we chose to switch that up and make it our main, cozy, family room. Seemed more appropriate with it being at the back of the house with a fireplace in it. I forgot to take a full room shot before we started painting the fireplace, so you’ll get one with half the fireplace painted and one full view with it white. I’m always amazed at how different a space can feel just by simply painting! Chris also built the wood mantle and we installed recessed lighting instead of the ceiling fan.

Entry/Dining/Kitchen

This was definitely our biggest project for this house. We removed the main load-bearing wall that ran down the middle of the house and separated the kitchen from the front. In addition to removing the wall, we gutted, rearranged, and reinstalled the entire kitchen, installed built-in bench seats for the dining room table, and removed a long wall from the entryway allowing the door to open into the main living space. We also installed new hardwood flooring throughout the entire main living space and 20+ recessed lights. It was a lot of late nights, but boy was it worth it!

Apparently our dog Dahlia wanted to be in all these “before shots”… 😉

Gallery

Tucked between the gallery wall and the built-in hutch is this little coffee bar/butler’s pantry. 🙂

One Year Home

This picture was taken before we painted the ceiling, installed the crown molding on the cabinets and put up our brick backsplash, but it will give you an idea of the built-in dining room benches and the new layout of the kitchen. We still need to build our farmhouse dining table. And I think I’m going to spray paint our chandelier black. What do you think?

Living Room/Office

There isn’t much in the way of a living room at this house, but we had a bit of space in the front of the house next to the entry and dining room so we decided to build in a daybed (since we don’t have a guest bedroom it’s really handy!) as a window seat with storage towers and a built-in desk. I really love how this space has turned out!

Front Yard

We’ve also spent a lot of time this month freshening up the front yard. We pressure washed, weeded, added new bark, edged the grass, planted a few flowers, added some patio furniture and a few potted plants. 🙂

I still want to add a large, square, cedar flower box next to the front door and underneath the light.

And that brings us to today. Tonight, Chris wired up our front lamp post so it finally works and installed a bit of crown molding in the entry. Each week we mark another few things off our list!

Here’s a glimpse at what our list looks like currently (in no particular order):

    • Crown Molding throughout hallway, family room and living room/entry
    • Build dining room table
    • Paint all interior doors and jams
    • Install desk light
    • Move recessed lights in living room (we installed them before the built-ins and I don’t like where they align with it so I’m going to remove one and move the other…)
    • Touch up trim on built-ins in living room
    • Install a drawer in the kitchen island
    • Master bathroom makeover
  • Backyard deck/patio makeover (Did you see my post about the 10 updates I want to incorporate??)

Sounds doable, right?! Of course, there’s always other people reaching out for our help, so that adds to the workload. But I wouldn’t give up helping others for anything! In fact, tomorrow is DEMO DAY at my parent’s house for their bathroom makeovers we’re helping with! I plan to post about it over the weekend, so look forward to that.

I hope you had as much fun as I did looking back through all the updates we’ve done this last year. It’s amazing what can be accomplished with toddlers asleep in the next room. 😉 Have a wonderful rest of the week and I’ll catch you all this weekend!
