She-Shed Reveal – A Coastal Glam Home Office

Come take a tour of our backyard shed turned home office! This beautiful she-shed is now the proud home to our interior design business!

In just 8 weeks, we’ve transformed a dark, dirty storage shed into a bright, coastal-glam home office. What started out as a standard 10ft x 16ft backyard shed has been turned into a stunning living space – outfitted with all sorts of stylish finishes, like a custom clawfoot desk, crystal light fixtures and a cement tile accent wall. After hours of hard work, we’ve created something fabulous, and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Oh my goodness, I can not express how much I adore my she-shed. Honestly, if I could give every one of you what my husband has given me in this project, I would. In a heartbeat. I am beyond blessed and honored to have someone willing to work super long hours and weekends to get this project completed in a short time frame!

In case you’re new to the project, we decided about 2 months ago that I was going to quit my corporate job to pursue our business, Joyful Derivatives (which includes this blog) full time. Because we have a smallish house, and I didn’t feel like I could be effective working from our current guest room/office/daughter’s room, we decided to turn our large backyard shed (that came with the house when we bought it) into my office “away from home.” Adding 160sqft of living (and working) space to our home of 1400sqft was huge!

You can catch up on all the details leading up to this reveal here:

Ok, are you ready for all the details and a tour of our she-shed home office? I’ve linked up to the sources under each photo, but if there’s something I’ve missed, just let me know!

Here’s a peek inside from the front door to entice you… 😉

She-Shed Home Office Reveal

BEFORE

Like I mentioned before, this shed was already on the property when we purchased the home. It sat about 40ft behind the fence and was used to store tools and excess garage stuff…

DURING CONSTRUCTION

Here was our mini-project task list for this project (all of which is DONE now!)

  • Move shed
  • Install windows and doors
  • Install electrical
  • Install insulation
  • Install shiplap ceilings, sheetrock and tile walls
  • Paint exterior
  • Paint interior
  • Install lights
  • Install flooring
  • Install trim
  • Decorate and Furnish!

After the shed was in place, Chris started by installing all new windows and doors.

Then he installed all of the electrical, insulation, and shiplap ceiling.

Next, he installed, taped and mudded the sheetrock.

Then we primed and painted EVERYTHING at least twice. It was a family effort. 😉

I still can’t believe that in just 8 short weeks, we were able to build ourselves a home office I may never want to leave. 😉

One of my biggest goals with this blog is to help you, as my reader, understand the realities of DIY projects – especially renovations. They’re not all fun and games. They’re hard work, and we are abnormal in the speed of our projects. Partly because we like finished spaces, but partly because we put really tight time frames on ourselves to guarantee the projects get done. Chris and I honestly spent about 40-60 hours a week (on top of our jobs and family time) working on this she-shed conversion. We’re talking midnight-2am bedtimes and 12-14hr work days on the weekends. You get the gist.

All that said, if you are considering tackling a home renovation, make sure you have realistic expectations. Chris and I do offer affordable DIY renovation consulting where we work with you through the planning and renovating process, so if you’re planning a renovation and aren’t sure of the cost or realistic time frame, click here to book a free discovery call with us to see if we’d be a good fit! 🙂

AFTER

Let the tour begin!

Starting outside, we moved the shed flush with the fence (so clients can enter from the front of the house), painted the exterior and front door the same colors as our main house, and added DIY window grid panes to all the windows.

MAIN PAINT / TRIM PAINT / DOOR PAINT / DOOR MAT / PORCH LIGHT

Eventually we hope to have some sort of porch and eave over the door, but for now it’s just a wreath and door mat. 🙂

Come on in!

Under the loft we have my stunning claw-foot desk that was refinished by Amanda from Phoenix Phurnishings (a sponsor for this project.) Can you believe this started out as a cherry wood dining table?!

If you’re looking for someone to refinish a piece of furniture for you – she’s your gal. She’s super professional and her custom work process is really neat! She does everything she can to make sure you end up with a piece you love. 🙂

WALL PAINT / TRIM PAINT

I mean, look at those stunning details! She even custom made a matching medallion for the back side of the desk…

To the left of the desk, you have my extra-large work surface.

COUNTER TOP / HANGING FILE SORTER / TRASH & RECYCLE BINS / SCONCE

I got the counter top at IKEA (premade laminate), the file cabinet (which I painted white) and chair from garage sales and the large paint-chip calendar was a DIY project from years ago.

I love having a spot to easily store and access my working files! This simple wall-mount unit is both stylish and functional.

Of course, every space needs a little Rae Dunn. 🙂

Looking up from the front door, you’re greeted by one of my favorite parts to this space – the blue ceiling and crystal chandelier!

CHANDELIER / CEILING PAINT

The blue shiplap ceiling was designed to mimic the haint blue ceiling in southern porches and the large crystal chandelier is what truly glams up the space.

Both this chandelier and the sconces behind the desk are from the Charmed collection by Varaluz (a sponsor for this project) and are truly beautiful, high-quality fixtures.

I’m so excited to share with you that Varaluz has teamed up with Bellacor to offer my readers 30% off this collection! Just head here, and enter the coupon code VA30 at check-out. It’s only good until 9/22, so act quickly! I guarantee you won’t regret this purchase – these light fixtures are super well made and absolutely stunning.

The loft will be used primarily for decor storage and we chose to hang curtains across to hide my disorganized storage. 😉

On the front corner of the shed, we set up a round table to be used for client consultations.

Which brings me to my next favorite thing in this space… the cement tile accent wall!

We used the Knox Grey hexagon tile from Riad Tile (a sponsor for this project) and I love how it turned out. I mean, who needs wallpaper when you can just tile a wall, am I right? 😉

The day before we started tiling, I saw a kitchen on Pinterest that had a hexagon tile backsplash that stopped with an uneven edge. I fell in love with the concept, which led to us stopping the tile about 2/3 of the way up and leave it with a raw, zig-zag edge.

Since I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the wall above, I asked my Instagram followers for their input on the color and decor. Blue paint with an architectural element won the discussion, thus the medallion.

I love the way it pairs with the chandelier.

Next to the front door we have our AC unit and some closed cabinets for supply storage.

Of course, my office wouldn’t be complete without some sort of coffee bar… 😉

I truly can’t wait to spend every day working in this space. Being an entrepreneur is so exciting!

The kids seem to like it too. 🙂

Well, there you have it! Thank you so much for stopping by to take a tour of our DIY shed turned home office! I know this she-shed will get tons of use and I’m looking forward to experiencing the growth of our business in there. 🙂
