These DIY paint chip bookmarks are the perfect functional valentine for friends and classmates! Follow these step-by-step instructions for a quick and inexpensive way to make your own DIY valentine bookmarks.

This post was originally published on February 4, 2019 but has since been updated to include printable instructions.

It’s February, and you know what that means… time to make valentines!

I’ve never been super into Valentine’s Day (you won’t see my house overly decorated for it – just a bit of blush decor) but I’ve always enjoyed participating in exchanges and making cute little gifts for friends.

We do an optional valentine exchange at work every year and as I was perusing Pinterest this week to get an idea for my valentines I found this super cute picture of bookmarks made out of pink paint chips!

Could it be any more appropriate for me, the DIY/house updating addict?

And, on top of that, it’s something they can actually USE!

I loved the idea. So off to Home Depot I went to grab 15 free paint chips – talk about cheap valentines! 😉

I also had to go to Michael’s to get the heart punch and ribbon, but for only $4 I had all the materials I needed.

Not bad for 25 cute, functional valentines! I hope you have as much fun making these as I did!

Materials Needed:

  • Paint Chips (I cut mine in half so I only needed half as many, but if you’re getting smaller ones you may need one per valentine)
  • Small Ribbon (I used about 1ft per valentine and so got two 6yrd spools)
  • Address Labels

How to Make DIY Valentine Bookmarks

STEP 1: Cut Paint Chips and Punch Holes

I began by cutting my paint chips in half – if yours are smaller, you could definitely make the bookmarks from a full paint chip.

Cut the paint chip in half to create your DIY Bookmarks.

Then, I used the heart hole punch to cute hearts along the bottom three color samples and my regular hole punch to cut a hole in the top color for the ribbon.

Because my paint chips had a curved top and bottom I chose to punch the hears along the “cut” side of them.

Lastly, punch the top edge of your bookmark with a basic hole punch.

STEP 2: Add Ribbon

After all the holes were in place I added the ribbon marker.

Begin by cutting a ribbon at about 12″ long and putt both ends together then laced it through the ribbon hole (going front to back.)

Lace the ribbon through the top hole of your DIY bookmark.

Then, lace them back through the loops.

STEP 3: Personalize with a Note

Lastly, I stuck an address label on the back (over the paint chip writing) and wrote a little “Happy Valentine’s Day” note on there to personalize them.

Final step in making DIY bookmarks out of paint chips - a tag on the back!

You wouldn’t have to do this step if you were including them in a larger grouping of things or if you didn’t want to personalize them but I wanted my coworkers to know who the bookmark was from.

And that’s it! Simple, right?! And now you have cute, inexpensive, hand-made valentines.
