Looking for inspiration for decorating your home this Christmas but want to keep it simple? I’m giving you some lovely, yet easy to accomplish, simple holiday decorating ideas!
I love decorating for the holidays, and if you know me at all, my style is pretty much always centered around simplicity.
I rarely over-decorate, and when I do change out my décor it’s typically just one or two items, rather than everything.
Even with the holidays, I’ve found easy ways to put out simple décor and still make our living room look festive and cozy.
I hope this tour is inspirational for you as you decorate for the holiday season this year!

Welcome to our living room decorated for Christmas!
I tend to go back and forth each year with adding red into the mix and this year was definitely one that called for the cheer that comes with that color.
The only thing I purchased this year was some new pillows – I got a pair of red cable knit pillows, green velvet pillows and the white “let it snow” pillow that’s on the couch.
I’m in love with these two cream throw blankets – they typically stay out year-round.
Over on the piano I placed some natural elements – the wood tree and reindeer – along with some more modern pieces like the glass jar filled with bulbs and the gold glitter bottle brush tree.
I love using empty frames to vignettes – look for them at your local thrift store!
The glass jar was also thrifted, and I just added a few green and gold bulbs and gold lined pinecones to it to bring the colors from the rest of the décor to that corner.
I’m so glad we invested in this artificial pencil tree last year – our living room is quite small and this tree allows us to have room for it and enjoy it all season without worrying about it drying out before Christmas!

As always, I placed some pillows and a throw on the hearth.
For the mantel, I hung our handmade stockings (I made these a few years ago but you can get similar ones here) on the front and topped it with two greenery garlands, a gold bead garland, and a mixture of cream and gold candles.
I got this fun Merry Christmas sign at a local small shop and I just love it! You can grab a similar one here.
The bottle brush trees are from the dollar spot at Target. They’re so popular right now that I couldn’t stand being the only one without bottle brush trees in my décor so I caved and added a few! 😉
To the right of the mantel is our TV, and we chose to hang our rustic deer head over it.
I always like to give my décor just a bit of playful style, so I hung some gold bead garland on him. 🙂
Each night we light all the candles and enjoy the warm and cozy ambiance.
These gold mercury class votive holders are one of my favorites! They’re originally from Dollar Tree, can you believe it?! And I’m always layering them on top of my wood coasters.
I hung my stockings on small, clear 3M hooks this year and I love how sturdy they are!
The space really is cozy and I’m so pleased with how simple yet festive it is!
I definitely love decorating for the holidays, but I can’t handle having too much stuff around so this type of simple décor is perfect for our home.
Tips for Keeping Christmas Décor Simple
Here are my favorite simple holiday decorating ideas:
- Add Christmas colors by swapping out pillows and throws.
- Don’t top every surface with knick-knacks. Try creating vignettes with just a few large, holiday-themed items or add just one large item (like a candle) to your table tops or mantel.
- Keep your neutral/natural décor from the rest of the year up and just sprinkle in a few holiday-themed items.
- Hang neutral stockings
- Decorate your tree with white lights and simple, colored bulbs.

Ya, looks like those are no longer available. Here’s a similar one: https://rstyle.me/+U3TpwWpuOdhWFcE5NomuFQ And this one is reversible – which is really cool!
I tried clicking the link for the black plaid pillows, any chance you could tell me where you found them? Thanks for any help you can give me. I love your mantel!
I sent you an email! We did use supports anchored to the brick with glue and screws.
Yay, I’m so glad! Merry Christmas!
Thank you for sharing your home tour with us. Inspires me to get out the decorations and get them up but keep it simple. Thank you
Hello,
I found your instructions on how to make your curved mantel. My handy man has couple of questions. What type of crossbars are in the back and about how much weight will this mantle hold. He is trying to figure out other than anchors in the brick, how it stays up without posts. Thank you, Vicky
